2X Systems Secures D-Day Commemorations in Southsea

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, a host of special events took place across the UK and France.

Codenamed ‘Operation Overlord’, D-Day was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The enormous operation involved almost 160,000 troops and kickstarted the Allied victory on the Western Front, which eventually led to the end of World War II.

Hosted by the Ministry of Defence, the events saw one of the biggest mobilisations of the UK Armed Forces in recent years – featuring over 4,000 personnel, 11 Royal Navy vessels and multiple aircraft including the famous Spitfire fighter plane.

Portsmouth, where much of the landing force sailed from in 1944, was the focal point of the UK commemorations and the seaside resort of Southsea played host to the national event on the 5thJune.

2X Systems was tasked with providing the security screening equipment for the high-profile event – which welcomed dignitaries and heads of state from around the world to honour the veterans who were among the 24,000 soldiers to touch down on the beaches of Normandy 75 years ago.

Theresa May hosted the 15 world leaders of every country that fought alongside the UK in the Battle of Normandy, including US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. The Prime Minister was also joined by the Queen, Prince Charles and German Chancellor Angela Merkel – as well as the 300 veterans, now all in their 90s, and their guests.

Outside of a formal summit, the Southsea commemorations were the first time Britain had hosted this many world leaders since the 2012 Olympics. Some 60,000 members of the public were also in attendance at the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Southsea Common. As such, the event posed a massive security risk.

Over the past few years, large-scale events and crowded places such as this have found themselves the target of terror attacks. It was, therefore, absolutely essential that dignitaries and the general public could have confidence in and rely on security providers to keep the event secure and protected – while also complementing the event environment and overall operation.

This is where 2X Systems’ vast experience and advanced products came into play. Specialising in providing uncomplicated products and systems to meet the requirements of the fast-moving security scanning industry, 2X Systems deployed its walk-through metal detector to ensure the safety of all attendees.

The 2X-833 is a leader in its class and offers security operators with a reliable system that is easy to install and can be used in various operational environments – making it the perfect choice for any security checkpoint.

The Director of ARC Event Solutions, Robbie Wilson, also worked alongside the overall security control team – bolstering 2X Systems’ security screening efforts with additional equipment such as bag scanners. He said: “It was a pleasure to work alongside 2X Systems at such a significant event and I am pleased to say the security scanning procedures went off without a hitch.”

Frank Baldwin, CEO of 2X Systems, also added:

“I am very pleased that 2X Systems was able to contribute to the event honouring the veterans and the D-Day landings 75 years ago. Security proceedings ran smoothly on the day and although it was a momentous task, we were able to tackle it with ease thanks to our wealth of experience within the security scanning industry and, of course, our advanced products.”
